HoT is difficult - thoughts?

Just wondering how others are faring with HoT and to try and understand if I'm doing something wrong.

I brought the expansion because I just can't stand the thought of me not being in a Guild Wars expansion. I was always finishing GW1 expansions and having a good time there.

HoT seems to be different, for one, I hadn't seen enough of GW2 proper so I pretty much turned up and left HoT on day one, however, I set up some training and didn't realise it was fueled by experience so I've wasted like 2 months of XP on nothing.

But in the first area I'm struggling to fill the updraft mastery and the bouncing mushrooms. I keep finding it difficult to reach the next WP and find it quite frustrating. I wait around for night kill sprees but am not enthused by sitting around and killing stuff all HoT night to grind away at XP.

How does everybody else get XP in HoT and move from place to place? does everybody sit around the first few WPs and grind out the HoT masteries so they can explore more?

It's a beautiful game, and amazing music and the new elite specialisations are amazing but.....the core game doesn't feel fun imo - am I missing something?

You're right. HoT is a completely different creature. It's definitely harder and they obviously wanted to smash the meta of 'berserker all the things'. You can no longer gear up with full berserker gear and face smash everything. My tips for HoT are....

1) There are several event trains. Find one being pushed by multiple people and follow those events. Look for commander tags and make your way to them. You'll get way more experience from events than you will from kills. If the map is dead use the LFG tool to find a taxi to a populated map.
2) Consider increasing your survivability by switching out trinkets for ones with vitality and toughness
3) Use food constantly. Not only can you get some extra survivability and/or damage but it gives you a boost to experience and thus filling those masteries faster. The halloween food will give +15%.
4) Dust off all those boosters you have sitting in your bank for additional survivability and experience
5) Be sure to bring crowd control skills to break those blue bars.
6) Monsters hit hard so be sure to dodge!
7) Call out in map chat if your going to try a hard HP. Chances are there are other people who need it that will want to come help.

The zerker meta is not dead it's just dead on melee classes/builds. I've actually found my fully zerk ranger and Mesmer to be completely fine with HoT. They both use ranged builds so they aren't bothered by HoT as much. My condi necro is fun as well as they've made most creatures in HoT to be vulnerable to condi damage vs straight damage.

These classes are still using the same exact build they had before HoT. I've unlocked all the elites and experimented with some but not that much. I've been really busy with two guild halls.

The thing I dislike the most about HoT (along with vertical maps) is that some builds are almost useless in HoT. For instance my old thief build of d/d and sb is basically worthless in HoT. The only CC I have with that is on steal on a 20s cooldown and the other things like cripple are useless in HoT. I've started running sw/p just to break the blue bars that much faster but I don't care for that build/weapon set.

I actually got a Knight's set exotic in case HoT was a pain but so far my berserkers is alright. As I move along I'll take that advice about food and change armour as well.

But I just can't seem to get xp, I'll have to follow those trains.

To Taxi I just join a party through the LFG tool and then jump out right?

Really wanna start getting all the HP stuff but need to use the crazy mushrooms and updraft skills.

Secondary question: Do I need to do Living Story 2 to get to HoT...really couldn't stand doing that again....

It might just be me, but I liked the GW1 expansions so much more. You can take your builds and stuff and move to different areas.

GW1 expansions ADDED to the skill base and gave more more skills and builds and didn't particularly punish any of them. They even added heroes which were awesome. Nightmare to balance but GW2 looks like a nightmare to balance as well for PvP.

The toughest enemies in PvE, to me, will always be the Charr from EOTN.

I'd like to make a thief but the general word on the street is they are not liked in groups? Is that true?

Yes, join the party, right click on top member in the party and join their instance.

You don't need to do Living story 2 again but you do need to unlock silverwastes to the Red Bastion to be able to start the HoT prologue to access the HoT maps.
