Graphics card recommendation

Ok with a bit of luck I should be getting a computer for free. This I hope I will be able to use to stop my 2007 mac book pro from taking offer or melting the desk.

the system is http://www.dell.com/uk/dfb/p/vostro-220/pd I think.

I expect I'll need a graphics card.

As Guild wars 2 is really the only game I play on PC this is the bench mark.

As this is a temporary solution (new PC at some point with bells and whistles) I just want to get it up to running the game reasonably well as cheaply as possible.

Graphics cards are currently giving me a headache as they seem to delight in being complex with meaningless names that appear to reflect nothing but their desire to confuse.

I am aware the PSU is low and I have no desire to seriously mess with the machine and replace it.

Anyone have any suggestions on what cheap graphics card would be best?

Give us a price range, I recently built a PC and its running anything Ultra on a smooth fps while running pretty much anything in the background. And can also handle the huge zerg events at highest quality only dropping to 30 fps at most but this is depending on how good your CPU is

the nvidia gtx 760 for $250 is pretty cheap for what it does (found @new egg), similarly the radeon 7850 is also good for the same price (~$219), they should run gw at highest quality.

just make sure to check their dimensions if they fit on the motherboard.

ok got the computer. yay needs graphics card and I think a new power supply to run that as only 230v I think

I was thinking of this power supply:

650W PC PSU, 12cm Silent Fan, SATA, 24 pin Power,...650W PC PSU, 12cm Silent Fan, SATA, 24 pin Power,...
any comments would be greatly appreciated, want to keep it below 30

makes more sense, i was just listing some high end ones that are "cheap" as in cost effective (meanwhile, nvidia titan is $1100 )

check out the radeon cards, they tend to be cheaper

well having popped the hud on the machine it is a 300w psu.

also 3gb of ram (pleasantly surprised)

I've decided to give the HD6450 a go as this should mean no messy psu change and be enough to run GW2, which is the most I am asking of the machine.

More surprisingly the on board graphics card is actually able to run GW2, even with the reported 64mb of Ram (it has to be more than that). However the character select screen runs at 29fps on the lowest setting so not something I am going to be using without more graphics power (or reducing the resolution to the lowest level).

However kudos to GW2 for being playable on lower than the recommended specs.

Yes, I noticed that too - that the game is vastly more optimised for lower end machines now than it was at launch (I'm thinking of my laptop here).

Re: gfx cards, I have the Radeon 7850 and agree with Ivan that it's a v.good card.

Also, you could consider buying some peripherals second hand if you are self-building. I think a lot of people like to have the latest and next cards - and will upgrade when new ones come out, by selling their old ones.

7850 still going very strong here.

Well whilst I await the new card I am still on the 2007 Macbook pro (which I upgraded to 3gb of RAM).

I just hope the card will work and I have the right ports and stuff. Fingers crossed

Well it all worked. 50fps on highest res for the monitor, looks nice. Still on basic setting but I expected that and I know no different still pretty.

Decided to do a clean install of windows 7 as this wasn't my computer previously and something was eating a gig of ram somewhere.

Now hopefully windows will have fully updated by the time I return to work.

N.B.

also post 500 after 8 years that's about a post once a week

Well things have moved on again. I have unexpectedly just got a better machine. And whilst an improvement I think the graphics card needs a upgrade.

here are the basic specs:
CPU
AMD FX-4350
Vishera 32nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M/USB3 (AM3R2)
Graphics
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon R7 200 Series (XFX Pine Group)

The graphics card is an R7 240

The PSU is 500W.

I would be looking to spend somewhere around 200 on a new graphics card.

Is there any recommendations?

Im in the same boat, I need a new graphics card aswell.

Though mine is slightly damaged and what do you know slightly out of warranty aswell.

Have solved/delayed the problem as long as i could.
But now its just at the point before endangering my entire hardware setup, so this needs to be replaced asap.

Was looking for a good replacement that was still in my budget.

So I ordered a : MSI R9 280 GAMING 3G

Should arrive this friday/saturday.
Will know after if I made a right choice.

---- Update

When i went to pick up my card I Managed to get the 280X version, as it went just on sale.
For a near negligible price increase got a even better card.

Performance hasnt really been tested yet.
But due to the inefficient use of resources by GW2, there is no real difference there as the game is still too CPU heavy.

I have a nvdia GTX 470 and have just ordered an Aftermarket cooler for it, I hope to overclock it from 607mhz(core clock) to 800mhz and 2000mhz ram (1600 default or something like that)

For the right price you can get one for about 25-50 2nd hand, and an after market cooler for about 25.

I know its not a GTX titan or the best, however it fairs up to the GTX 650ti(I think its that model anyhow) and that's not overclocked...

If my motherboard " MSI Z97-G43" had an nvdia chipset I would SLI it, however its Radeon , crossfire.

And so doubt sli would work.

Its a fairly new rig... with 2.9ghz, intel boosted 3.4Ghz quad core 4460s? cpu and just ordered another 8GB of ddr1600 overclockable ram for it (currently overclocked to 1887) so will have 12gb ready for GTAV on Tuesday!

I actually bought a pre made from Argos a couple of months ago, but I somehow managed to blow it up... so I took the CPU from it and bought the above parts...worked out to be rather expensive as the warranty was void cause i opened the case! sigh.

It gives me between 45 and 63 stable FPS on http://worldoftanks.eu/ and if vertical Tear thingy was enabled sometimes pop up to 150FPS, this is with Stock cooling and clocks atm.

However i have a load of Fans and Cooling equipment on its way from ebay, so then it will be a different story,

It will have HDMI by then too... to go with my Ten pound (10) 36 inch or something? HD TV ! (i still sort of owe a friend 30 for it... but... that's on a "when i see him basis!"

PS- i downloaded the GTA one demo the other day and it reminded me of 3DFX cards, and how i would never be able to afford one, Giggle.

Sorry if im a little off topic but havnt used any of this rigs bragging rights until now.. and am proud of it, "a reasonable gaming machine". that is till GTAV tells it off (well at least i expect it to)

Unfortunatry with the countless houses iv lived in over the past 5-10 years my gw2 games/account info has vanished!

Anyway, hope your graphics card worked out!

peace,
9z
